IMAGINATIVE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE GULF & AFGHANISTAN WARS

This collection grew from the philosophy that in order to build collections about current events, it is best to begin while they are still occurring. This collection consists mainly of feature films and documentaries on the military operations of the last 20 years, including the Persian Gulf War- AKA Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm (1990-1991), the Afghan War(2001-), and the Iraq War- AKA Operation Iraqi Freedom, or the Second Gulf War (2003-). It is supplemented by a selection of print material.

VIDEO HIGHLIGHT

Restrepo: One Platoon, One Valley, One Year

Summary: This documentary chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley. The movie focuses on a remote 15-man outpost, Restrepo, named after a platoon medic who was killed in action. It was considered one of the most dangerous postings in the U.S. military. This is an entirely experiential film: the cameras never leave the valley; there are no interviews with generals or diplomats.
